INCENDIUM
ESSE QUAM VIDERI
Incendium : A fire, inferno, conflagration, heat.
Esse quam videri is a Latin phrase meaning "To be, rather than to seem"
The artwork has a central theme of exploring the history of Melbourne (in particular 276 Flinders Street where once stood the remarkable building named Finks Building). The visual collage represents important historical events such as the Finks Building and Melbourne’s Great Fire of November 1897. Melbourne is further portrayed by hand drawn Victorian Native Plants, English Roses, Butterflies and Birds. This is a diverse city in its flora, fauna and cultures. The hand painted watercolor splashes symbolize an important event in 1849 when James Blackburn, an engineer from Tasmania, received permission to pump water to a large overhead tank at the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders Streets and sell it to the public at much reduced rates. The aim of this artwork is initially to provide visual interest to the people of this wonderful city. It also enables me to provide historical information to those who take further interest. HOW THE WEST WAS (1)
Augmented Reality Artwork
“How the West was (1)” has a central theme of exploring history. In combination with the visual collage that represents important historical elements there is sound, smell, texture and technology.
The SOUND of Werribee River, Birds and Farm Animals is activated with an Infrared Motion Detector. The SMELL of Mimosa is applied to the TEXTURE of the Wool on the back of the artwork (Mimosa Fragrance = Werribee does smell wonderful, Wool = “Riding on The Sheep’s Back” Australia Wool History in 1950s ). The TECHNOLOGY (augmented reality app or scan the QRCode) allows you to hold your phone camera over the artwork and explore Wyndham History through animation, pictures and video.
This artwork honours Werribee's long history; the people and the places. I want to make art that can be understood and enjoyed by many people and I want to share my love of history, architecture and the Werribee River.

RED WEST
Public Art Installation for Wyndham City Council and RedWest
For me public art is accessible art of any kind that cares about/challenges/involves and and consults the audience for or with whom it is made, respecting community and environment; the other stuff is still private art, no matter how big or exposed or intrusive or hyped it may be.
